Pandey, Pande, or Panday (Hindi: पाण्डेय/पाण्डे/पाँडे/पाण्डेय) (Nepali: पाण्डे/पाँडे/पाण्डेय) is primarily a Hindu Brahmin surname commonly found in India and Nepal. It is a variant of the Sanskrit stem: paṇḍita- (nom. pandit), which is used to refer to an individual with specialized knowledge in any of the domains of Hinduism, particularly the Vedas.[1][2] In Hindi, in addition to being a surname, pāṇḍe is also used to refer to people engaged in one of two traditionally Brahmin occupations of teaching and cooking.[2]

India

Most people with this surname in India are classified under the Brahmin varna[3]. It is mainly found in people of the north Indian states of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Maharashtra, Delhi, and Madhya Pradesh, but also in Karnataka in South India.

Nepal

People with this surname are found in the Madhesi people and the Chhetri Kshatriya communities of Nepal. The famous Pande dynasty of Nepal were a Chhetri aristocratic family that dominated the Nepalese administration and military up until the 19th century as Mulkaji and Mukhtiyar.[4]
